History

History

Ay’Lira was the firstborn daughter of a palace guardsman and a historian of Malkier fifteen years before it fell to the Shadow. She was the only child for many years, so her father taught her a little about the weapons he used. She didn’t use them often, but she loved archery. Her mother taught her to read and write while inadvertently creating an interest in the girl for her homeland’s history. Ay’Lira grew up happily for ten years before her brother Teru was born. Since she was ten when he was born, she knew that her parents needed to spend more time with the baby than her, so she tried to make new friends. There weren’t many children around the palace, but she did before a girl named Benna. She seemed to like things that girls should like: dresses, make up, hair, sewing. Despite their differences, though, the two became good friends. When she and Benna turned fourteen, Benna began training as a maid for the palace. Ay’Lira’s parents had always told her that she could be whatever she wanted. She wasn’t sure what that was quite yet, but she knew she didn’t want to be a maid.

She stayed with her parents and helped raise her brother, giving him tips in archery, and helping him learn to read so that her parents could relax, and she could bond with her brother. As she helped, she couldn’t help but notice that there seemed to be a tension in the air that had been building up, something that she hadn’t noticed until it was too late. Her father was now coming home harried and stressed out, her mother seemed more frantic, and spent more time in the palace trying to compile records, making sure that everything was perfect. Her parents didn’t want to tell her what was going on, so she had to find out on her own. The Blight was getting closer and closer. And from what she could tell, there would be war soon.

When the fighting began, she knew what she had to do. She had to run with her brother and her mother, if she would come, and flee. There was no doubt that her father would have to fight, and since her mother worked in the palace as well, she wasn’t sure. Her mother did agree and packed up to leave with her children. Before they left, Benna’s mother begged them to take her daughter with them. The team of four fled from Malkier to Shienar. They stayed in an inn taking in refugees for a while. During that time, Benna helped in repairing clothes, making clothes, and making extra money for when they would surely need it later. Ay’Lira’s mother kept Teru busy, and Ay’Lira herself caught food and gave the very sparse game to the inn, ensuring that her family could stay. She wasn’t very good at hunting, but she wasn’t useless, either.

When it became known that Malkier had fallen to the Shadow, Ay’Lira and her family began to make a life for themselves in Shienar. Benna became an apprentice seamstress, her mother used the records she had somehow saved from the palace to begin writing history books, and Ay’Lira helped the best way she could. A year after Malkier fell, a band of Aes Sedai passed through their town in Shienar, checking on the refugees. One in a blue shawl visited the small family’s house and tested Benna and Ay’Lira. The Aes Sedai almost seemed disappointed that Benna could not make the small jewel flash a tiny light, but Ay’Lira could. She supposed it was because of their differing natures. After talking it over with her mother and Teru, it was decided that Ay’Lira would go to the Tower to train to become an Aes Sedai.

Accepted Interview:

Part 1 – Out of Character
1.1. Which Ajah do you aspire to join and why?

Ay’Lira will be aspiring to the Green Ajah. She considers herself a
warrior for the Light. Not just because of where she is from, but
because this is a core part of herself. She faces her problems
head-on and will face the Shadow in the name of the Light in much the
same way.

1.2. How old would you place your Aes Sedai in the Main Timeline?
Remember that Sitters must be at least 90 years of Age to sit in the
Hall. (Information on the Aes Sedai Aging system is on both the
Website and the WT Structure Board)

66

1.3. Have you role-played with any members of your aspiring Ajah? If
so, who? What sort of impact did that member have on your character?

Yes, she has. She took a class with Taia of the Green Ajah. Their
personalities clashed, and Ay’Lira had to learn how to deal with the
tension on her own instead of running to help from her former mentor.
In the end, the class made Ay’Lira push herself in her training and
she learned a few things along the way about herself and the One
Power.

1.4. Define freely what your character sees to be her Ajah’s purpose?
Does if differ from the norm?

Ay’Lira sees the Green Ajah as a society of warriors for the Light.
They stand ready to do battle where others might shy away from it.
They students of history and have great respect for battles. While
her philosophy doesn’t specifically include Tarmon Gai’don, it is a
battle as any others are.

1.5. What kind of a role would you like your character and you OOCly
to have in your Ajah and in the White Tower?

Ay’Lira will be young for an Aes Sedai, but she doesn’t have much of
an interest in politics, anyway. She’d be good for strategies and
actually fighting in battles, aiding her sisters, their Warders, and
allies.

Part 2 – In Character Development
2.1. What kind of a woman was your character when she was enrolled as
a novice and what kind of a woman is she now?

Ay’Lira was admittedly a little conflicted when she enrolled in the
Tower. She was still reeling from the fall of her nation and the
death of her father. Before she agreed to go to the White Tower, she
had to discuss whether or not to go with her family. Many Malkieri
felt the Aes Sedai hadn’t defended them as they should. But Ay’Lira
and her family knew that they had just been too late. The fact that
they tried meant a great deal to her. But she still missed her family
and thought about her life there often. She was still growing
emotionally, too, and didn’t know how to deal with her how
short-comings or external problems.

Now she has a much better understanding of what the Aes Sedai do, and
what they all stand for. She has taught conflicted and confused
novices who were just like she had been before, and can relate to them
on some level. She sees the importance of serving all, and feels she
can combine that along with the side of her that is a warrior. She
also has better mental tools to deal with her own problems whether
with herself or with someone else.

2.2. What have been the most important, defining events in her life
and how have they changed her? Separate the events to life before the
Tower, life as novice and life as Accepted. Who are the people that
have affected her life the most as Novice and as Accepted and how have
they done that?

Before Ay’Lira left the Tower, the most defining moment in her life
was the fall of Malkier. Her mother was too preoccupied with her work
when the time came to leave, so Ay’Lira had to prepare her family to
leave. She orchestrated the retreat and left with her mother, her
brother, and her best friend.

In her time as a novice, she had a trying day. She continued to
garner tasks that that only frustrated her at the end of the day when
she was late meeting her mentor. But when she did finally meet with
her mentor, she noticed that all that frustration didn’t boil over to
rage as it had in the past. What’s more, she had done it without the
help of her mentor.

In her time as Accepted, one of her shining moments came earlier than
she expected. In one of her first classes, one of her students died
from drinking in too much of Saidar on her own. Ay’Lira had to come
to terms with her student’s death, and stop blaming herself. The next
day, she continued class successfully.

2.3. What are your character’s weaknesses? Strengths? What is her
inner struggle? What is her philosophy of life?

Ay’Lira is bad about expressing her emotions in a productive way.
Sometimes they build up to the point where she gets very frustrated
for seemingly no reason. She has to tools to deal with it, but when
she realizes her frustrations have built up, sometimes she’s close to
exploding. Another weakness can be her stubborn independent streak.
This can be handy when she needs to work problems out for herself.
But it can be a hindrance when she needs help and refuses to ask for
it.

Her strengths include her willingness to learn. She is a student of
history and accepts tips and lessons when offered to her. While
frustrations can bog her mind down, she can stand the storm of grief
well on her own, having dealt with the fall of Malkier and the death
of her father in such a short time. She does grieve, but not where it
will interfere with the lives of others. Ay’Lira also understands the
importance of rank and authority quite well, knowing whom to bend to
and when.

Ay’Lira is a loyal person, but she knows that her loyalties will be
spread in different confusing directions when she gains the shawl.
And she knows that any loyalties she had as Accepted to her students
or her friends, while they may not disappear, they will change
drastically. But she’s come to terms with this, knowing that her work
as a Servant of All will be enough, as her loyalty to the Light is a
great one as well.

Ay’Lira’s philosophy of life is very simple. Things may go badly, but
the Wheel weaves, and they may not stay that way for long. The only
thing one can do is work to make them better.

2.4. What three words best describe your character’s personality?

Independent, stubborn, honest

Part 3 – The Role of an Aes Sedai
3.1. What do you think the role of an Aes Sedai is ICly?

The role of an Aes Sedai is to weave their webs of intrigue and
politics, but still glean their services to all in the Light. They
must still keep their purpose, no matter how complicated plots can be.

3.2. What has been the greatest sacrifice your character has made to
become an Aes Sedai?

Ay’Lira’s greatest sacrifice was when she left her family to come to
the Tower. It had only been a year since Malkier fell, and her family
was still reeling from the loss of their home and her father. But
when an Aes Sedai discovered the ability to learn to channel within
her, she left with her after deciding it with her family. She left
her mother, who still hadn’t dealt with her own grief, her little
brother her barely understood the permanence of death, and her best
friend who had lost her own family in the fall.

3.3. How is your character going to Serve All?

Ay’Lira will fight the Shadow with everything she has and is. Where
the Light prevails or fights against the Shadow, the people she serves
will prosper.

3.4. What would you like your character to achieve? What are her
ambitions in life? What kind of RP plans do you have in mind for your
Sister?

I would like Ay’Lira to be the warrior that she is. Anything that she
does will be for the fight against the Shadow, whether it be strategy
building or actual fighting. Anything she achieves will be under
that.

Ay’Lira’s ambitions are simply to keep fighting for the Light in
whatever way she can.

Ay’Lira will be a young Aes Sedai, and her OP score is average, so
she’ll likely be accompanying other stronger and more experienced
sisters and assisting them, which she doesn’t mind.

3.5. How does your character feel about Warders in general and of the
whole bonding?

Ay’Lira is very much pro-Warder. She doesn’t consider Warders tools
or lovers as some sisters might. Any man bonded as her Warder will
always be a warrior in the Light that fights alongside her first.
